It might be surprising to know that certain illnesses can be caused my medical causes. Although most people think that illnesses are mostly caused by irregularities and probably lack of concern for some, there are diseases that spring out of medical causes and treatments. One of them is hypothyroidism.

Determining the medical facets of hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism constitutes the irregular function of the thyroid gland. A butterfly-shaped gland in the front of the neck, the thyroid gland is the powerhouse of the hormones important to a lot of bodily functions. Not all causes of hypothyroidism have been detected. However, recent researches have pointed out the connection of hypothyroidism to the following:

Lithium treatments

Manic-depressive treatments such as lithium and other similar anti-depressants are very much known for their contribution to hypothyroidism. When taken excessively, these types of drugs disrupt the natural functions of the thyroid gland which, in turn, cause hypothyroidism. It is for this reason that anti-depressants must be taken under the care of medical experts.

Hashiloto’s thyroitis

Known as a chronic thyroid disease, Hashiloto’s thyroitis makes the thyroid gland inflamed. Damaging the thyroid cells in a massive manner, the disease can then turn out to encourage hypothyroidism. Since the antibodies turn as the protector of the disease when a patient has Hashiloto’s thyroitis, the individual is very susceptible to thyroid-related ailments. That is why it is best to have this kind of illness treated at once.

Autoimmune diseases

There are a lot of diseases that can cause hypothyroidism. Autoimmune diseases make the body’s cells attack its own cells thus spreading the diseases even more. Some of these diseases are vitiligo, anemia, rheumatoid arthritis and diabetes. These diseases must be managed immediately to prevent any occurrence and formation of other ailments such as hypothyroidism.

Radioactive iodine therapy

A common treatment for patients with goiter, radioactive iodine therapy has also been found to cause hypothyroidism. As this particular treatment prevents the overproduction of the hormone thyroxine, it is best that it should be done so in moderation. Undergoing too much radioactive iodine therapy that the body can control can lead to the prevention of thyroxine production.
