Thyroid Association with Hair Loss

Thyroid Association with Hair Loss

The thyroid is a very important organ in a human body. Though we do not use it like we use our sense organs, but without it our body will collapse. Primarily, the thyroid is a gland that has a shape like a butterfly which produces hormones that catalyzes chemical and physical processes. It is also responsible for the distribution of energy in our body. If the thyroid glands malfunction, it affects our hair too, which leads to hair loss.

Most common diseases of the thyroid glands are hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. If men suffer from male pattern baldness, these two thyroid disorders also affect women. Women need not grow old to feel the symptoms of these two disorders as these will attack younger women in their twenties and thirties. Every year, it is found out that American women are affected by hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism.

If the thyroid glands produce more than the normal thyroid hormone, it is called hyperthyroidism. On the other hand, if there are not enough thyroid hormones, it is called hypothyroidism. Actually, there are a number of hyperthyroidism disorders, but the most common is Grave’s disease. Hashimoto’s disease is also the most common hypothyroidism.

Before any thing could get worse, it may be better for you to know the symptoms of these disorders. If you experience abnormal weight gain or loss, if you perspire a lot and your feet swells, it is time to consult your doctor on whether you have hyperthyroidism. Dry skin, swelling of eyelids and body parts and dry skin are just one of the many symptoms of hypothyroidism. Of course, both of these disorders are accompanied by an alarming amount of hair loss.

Like any other illness or disorder, hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism should be consulted with a specialist who can give you possible solutions. Your problem with hair loss can surely be solved if the disorders are resolved.
