We remember people by their smiles. It’s ironic, however, that people don’t give much value to how they’re able to smile. The term “pearly whites” is used to denote teeth in the peak of health. You see such teeth on celebrities. Every time they smile on television, they light up the screen. Sadly, however, media is not enough to influence irresponsible people who don’t care much for their teeth or gums. Such people revel in eating all kinds of food, indulge in bad habits, and generally ignore warnings to visit their dentist lest they develop gum disease. As a result, their teeth and gums develop into a woeful state filled with plaque and tartar. It’s not long before they start feeling pain brought about by bacterial infection. When they look at the mirror, they’ll be horrified at the sight of their black and bleeding gums, and only at that point will rush to the dentist to ask for aid.

Soft Tissue Grafts as Cure for Gum Disease

Do not be like these people. Always care for your gums and teeth by brushing and flossing your teeth after every meal. In order to motivate your self further to clean and maintain your teeth regularly, here’s some information regarding gum disease and just how dangerous it is as a dental ailment.

Gum disease occurs most often to people who do not practice proper dental care. Because of lack of cleaning, the tooth and gums are prone to tartar and plaque formation. These invite bacteria to grow and develop in the inner recesses of the mouth. The bacteria implant themselves on the teeth and gums and begin drilling further down, up to the root of the teeth. Once they reach the root, the bacteria destroy the tooth from the inside. Once the root has been infected, there’s small chance that the teeth can be saved. In this case, the only option is to remove the infected tooth to alleviate the pain and keep the bacteria from spreading.

For advanced gum disease, surgical methods should be utilized to save the remaining gums and teeth and avoid them from being infected as well. A good method to get rid of gum disease involves soft tissue grafting. Because of gum disease, gums are peeled back, exposing teeth and their roots. Because of this exposure, bacteria are easily able to penetrate the inner portion of teeth. Teeth also become long and unsightly because they are not properly covered by the gums. In order to resolve this problem which may aggravate gum disease further, soft tissue grafts are inserted on the areas where the gums have peeled off. These soft tissue grafts gradually combine with the gums, covering the exposed teeth roots and preventing the spread of gum disease. Soft tissue grafting has also been able to cure teeth oversensitivity. People who are afflicted with this condition perceive changes in hot or cold as painful and nauseating. This can be caused either by gum disease, or the peeling back of the gums. Soft tissue grafting can resolve problems caused either by gum disease or oversensitivity.
