Anaheim, California – The relationship of drinking green tea catechins (GTCs) and prostate cancer prevention was reported during the 96th Annual Meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research in Anaheim, CA.

The Research Study
The study involved male subjects who took GTCs for a year. The researchers found out that only 1 out of the 32 men who took GTCs is at high risk in developing prostate cancer. Those in the control group who did not take GTCs showed 9 out of 30 male subjects are most likely to develop cancer of the prostate.

Italian researchers from the University of Modena found out that epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) in green tea’s GTCs can cause prostate cancer cell death. The Italian researchers, Reggio Emilia and Saverio Betuzzi, said that the compound selectively kills cancer cells and does not affect normal body cells.

The subjects of the control group were 45 to 75 years old with high grade prostatic intraepithelial neoplasia. The neoplasia formed is a malignant lesion that premeditates the formation of prostate cancer cells. They were not given any treatments and did not also consume green tea and other green tea products.

Thirty percent incidence rate of prostate cancer in the control group was consistent with the researcher’s previous findings. There were no reported side effects or adverse reactions among the subjects in the treated group.
