In order to find ways of defeating fungal infections, one should first have basic knowledge of how fungi grow and develop. Some fungi can be used for beneficial purposes, while others can cause harmful infections. Unlike other microscopic organisms, fungi do not depend on sunlight in order to survive. There are many types of fungi. Fungi which cause nail infection are classified under the group dermatophytes. Other types of fungi, such as molds and yeasts, can also infect one’s nails. How do fungi infect one’s body? Fungi thrive on moisture-rich, warm places, such as shower rooms and swimming pools. They spread throughout one’s skin by taking advantage of openings such as microscopic cuts, or the area in between one’s nail bed and nail. Once your nails are subject to fungi-inducing conditions, you’re in danger of developing nail fungi. It is important to note that nail fungi usually develops on toe nails rather than finger nails. This is because toe nails are often subject to fungi-inducing conditions brought about by wearing of shoes. It has also been pointed out that blood flow on the toes is less than the blood flow on the fingers. This means that the body’s immune system responds more slowly to infections which develop on the toes because of the low blood flow.
