There is considerable controversy about the healing effects of magnets and electro-magnetic fields. Those advocating the therapy claim it can relieve pain caused by arthritis, headaches, including migraine, and stress. It is also claimed the therapy can heal broken bones, improve circulation, reverse degenerative diseases, and cure cancer. You will also find arguments that magnets positioned over areas of pain or disease strengthen the healing capability of the body. Some believe that magnetic fields can change nerve impulses, increase oxygen being sent to cells, decrease fatty deposits on artery walls, and realign thought patterns, so improving psychosocial well being.

Claims that magnetic therapy can cure cancer are based on the same sorts of thinking that informs oxygen therapy and acid/alkaline balance therapies. Supporters of magnetic therapy say that magnetic fields produced from the negative pole of the magnet have healing powers. Negative magnetic fields are considered to stimulate metabolism, increase the amount of oxygen available to cells, and create a less acid environment within the body. It is pointed out that production of energy by a cell requires oxygen and many other substances such as enzymes, glucose, and other nutrients. Cells also produce waste products. To be able to carry out and control all these processes, efficient cell metabolism is necessary.

Approximately 50 per cent of a cell’s energy goes towards maintaining an electrical membrane potential. When the electrical potential drops, active metabolism is impaired, and low performance levels and chronic disease result. Should cell potential reach zero, the cell dies. Pulsating magnetic fields can lead to the normalization of the cell membrane potential.

In some therapies pulsing magnetic fields are used because constant magnetic fields can’t penetrate the whole body. A pulsating field can be optimized to the correct frequency of vibration to effect the whole system. Modern lifestyles deplete the energy level of cells, leading to malfunction. Malfunctioning cells lead to disease. Exposure to these fields stimulates cell metabolism, increases oxygen assimilation and accelerates the removal of toxic chemicals and waste.

Magnetic fields are nothing new, they are all around us and in us and are part of all basic life processes.

Some practitioners of magnetic therapy make very wide claims for the treatment, including

* nerve regeneration

* wound healing

* pain relief

* improved circulation

* improved digestion

* lowered stress

* improved respiration, and

* a strengthened immuse system.

These claims are not yet supported by clinical trials accepted by conventional medical practitioners.
